As Puerto Rican Healthcare System Faces Collapse, Diverse Group of Experts to Highlight Impact on Island’s Most Vulnerable

San Juan, Puerto Rico – Puerto Rican healthcare experts will participate in a press conference call on Thursday, May 19 at 2pm EST, to discuss the effect of Puerto Rico’s collapsing healthcare system on the Island’s most vulnerable citizens. The experts, including Dr. Johnny Rullán, former Puerto Rico Secretary of Health and Secretary of the Puerto Rican Healthcare Crisis Coalition (PRHCC) and Ricardo A. Rivera-Cardona, Executive Director of Puerto Rico Health Insurance Administration, will discuss recent developments on the Island that have contributed to the current state of crisis for its 3.5 million American citizens.

Hospital closings, combined with a major doctor exodus, have led to extreme waiting times for appointments even in the case of cancer treatments and other urgent healthcare issues. One recent estimate found that one doctor every day leaves Puerto Rico to practice on the mainland United States.
